If you’re a new BDR like myself, the hardest part of the learning curve is actually feeling comfortable on the phone and having conversations with total strangers about something they probably know more about than you do.  Even though I may be new to the BDR role, here’s one thing I’ve learned in the past six months:

Your personality is your greatest asset.

I’m sure if I told my friends I thought I could use my personality to help me succeed in anything they would laugh in my face, but you have to play the hand you’re dealt, right? If you’re working in sales it’s most likely because you sound great on the phone, and have a lively personality, and you could probably have a conversation with anyone about anything.

This can all change when you hit the phones though.

Speaking over the phone can be more difficult than in person. Without visual cues and eye contact, it can be tough to engage in conversation. It’s too easy to become tense, overthink your call, or doubt yourself. For this reason, it’s imperative to have energy and personality on your calls. Take a deep breath and allow yourself to accept the situation and let your personality flourish. It has taken you this far in life, why stop now?

Us BDRs aren’t given much time to win over prospects. Using your personality to make yourself memorable and create a rapport with the people you’re calling takes no time away from the purpose of your call and will help you in the long run. It allows your prospect to let their guard down and instantly feel more comfortable with you.

Here at Reveneer, we are trained to practice the art of conversation. Rather than print a script and sound like a robot, we encourage people to be themselves. When BDR’s become more comfortable over the phone, they start having more conversations, and more conversations always has the potential for more sales! Let’s face it, no one enjoys speaking with a brick wall and certainly won’t remember it. As a BDR it’s our responsibility to do whatever we can to separate ourselves from the rest of the BDR army; the best thing you can do for yourself, is be yourself.
